ZZ Top Biography

Profoundly American, and staunchly blues-derived, the gritty Texas sound of that "little ol' band from Texas" ZZ Top has been a staple of classic rock radio, FM AOR stations, and backyard barbecues for three decades. Guitarist Billy Gibbons, bassist Dusty Hill, and drummer Frank Beard have weathered many trends across that span and have emerged as rock 'n' roll institutions, ever-improving musicians and titillating personalities.

Formed in 1970 outside of Houston, Beard, Hill, and Gibbons came together with a love for the blues of their homeland, and a unanimous appreciation for Jimmy Vaughan. Together, on the strength of their mutual respect for boogie and blues, the band began to hone their chops. Their first three albums were solid sets of raw blues power, culminating in the fine Tres Hombres, and the band's first single and subsequent classic rock staple, "La Grange". From there, the '70s grew to be the band's most successful decade, with consistently good musical output and a fast-growing fanbase. By the time the band did Deguello in 1979, they were selling out arenas and receiving significant airplay with songs like "Tush" and "Cheap Sunglasses." With the band's growing frat-boy persona and radio-friendly sexual inferences, the trio expanded their audience well outside the blues with successful albums like Eliminator and Afterburner, powered by MTV and frequent video images of beautiful, long-legged ladies. It was also at this time that they made a concerted effort to capitalize on their image: sunglasses, long beards, golf caps, and boiler suits.

In the '80s and early '90s, the band continued to tour, but ran thin of ideas in the studio. Recycler, Antenna, a greatest hits package, and a blues compilation, One Foot In The Blues, was all it could muster. That is, until 1996, when the band returned to the studio with a vengeance and released the angry Rhythmeen, their best studio album since the '70s. As they approach the millennium and their fourth decade together, is the best still to come from these hirsute Texans?
