ZZ Top Biography
Profoundly American, and staunchly blues-derived, the
gritty Texas sound of that "little ol' band from Texas" ZZ Top has been
a staple of classic rock radio, FM AOR stations, and backyard barbecues
for three decades. Guitarist Billy Gibbons, bassist Dusty Hill, and
drummer Frank Beard have weathered many trends across that span and have
emerged as rock 'n' roll institutions, ever-improving musicians and
titillating personalities. In the '80s and early '90s, the band
continued to tour, but ran thin of ideas in the studio. Recycler,
Antenna, a greatest hits package, and a blues compilation, One Foot In
The Blues, was all it could muster. That is, until 1996, when the band
returned to the studio with a vengeance and released the angry Rhythmeen,
their best studio album since the '70s. As they approach the millennium
and their fourth decade together, is the best still to come from these
hirsute Texans?
